The original Cayman GT4 marked a defining moment for Porsche’s mid-engined sports cars. Combining a naturally aspirated 3.8-litre flat-six with a six-speed manual gearbox and a focused chassis incorporating technology derived from the 911 GT3, the 981 GT4 established a formula that has since become one of the most desirable parts of Porsche’s modern GT lineage.
As the first Cayman to wear the GT4 badge, the 981 remains arguably the most analogue interpretation of the concept. There was no PDK option: every road-going 981 GT4 paired its naturally aspirated flat-six with a six-speed manual gearbox, mechanical limited-slip differential and rear-wheel drive. The result is a remarkably direct and engaging driving experience that stands apart even among later Porsche GT models.
This particular example is especially compelling. Finished in Racing Yellow over a black leather and Alcantara interior, it combines one of the model’s most desirable colour combinations with the highly sought-after 003 Clubsport Package and an exceptional factory specification.
The Clubsport configuration brings the 918 Spyder carbon-fibre bucket seats, six-point harnesses and black safety cage. The interior is further enhanced by extensive factory carbon-fibre detailing, including the dashboard trim, centre console and door-panel inserts, together with leather and Alcantara throughout the cabin.
Sport Chrono, the Alcantara sports steering wheel with yellow 12 o’clock marker and the factory sports exhaust system complete a specification focused firmly on the driving experience. Racing Yellow is carried through into the details of the cabin, while the combination of black leather, Alcantara and carbon fibre gives the interior exactly the purposeful character expected from a Clubsport GT car.
With only one owner, 18,200 km, a complete service history with Porsche and presented in excellent condition, this is an exceptionally well-preserved example of the original Cayman GT4.
The 981 GT4 was produced for only a short period during 2015 and 2016. According to some sources, approximately 2,500 examples were produced worldwide, making the original GT4 a relatively rare chapter in Porsche’s modern GT history.
Its significance has only grown with time. The 981 was the car that established the Cayman as a genuine Porsche GT model, combining ingredients that are becoming increasingly difficult to find in modern performance cars: a naturally aspirated large-capacity flat-six, six-speed manual transmission, mechanical limited-slip differential, compact mid-engined chassis and an exceptionally analogue driving experience.
With its Racing Yellow colour scheme, 003 Clubsport Package, 918 Spyder carbon-fibre bucket seats, extensive factory carbon-fibre trim, leather and Alcantara interior, Sport Chrono and sports exhaust, this example brings together many of the characteristics enthusiasts look for in a 981 GT4.
A low-mileage, beautifully specified and exceptionally well-kept Clubsport example of the original Cayman GT4 – and one of the purest expressions of Porsche’s modern GT philosophy.
The car is currently registered in Estonia.
